Dismantling God's Ownership : Exclusive Shavuot to Inclusive Pentecost

Dismantling God's Ownership : Exclusive Shavuot to Inclusive Pentecost

The  Israelites (Jews)  have always identified themselves as the chosen ones of God. The influence of this privileged position sets them up above all the nation in the world.Every fundamentalist Christian believes that  It's Israel that God has chosen to bless beyond measure than every other nation. Almost all devout fanatic Christian believes it, so much so that he/she would support Israeli occupation of Palestine.

But God does on  Pentecost  day is a dismantling of a well established myth of God's favoritism to Israel(Jews).

It was Shavout , the seventh week after Passover  and the day when the Torah was believed to be given through Moses to the nation of Israel , Its the day that all the Jews in the diaspora would come together in Jerusalem to give thanks for the act of God of saving their ancestors from the land of Egypt , who were oppressing them and God giving them the laws to lead  a God pleasing life.

It's the same day that God chooses to bring down the supremacy and the ownership of God that Jews hold dearly. By the the descending of Holy Spirit in the upper room  on all and henceforth   God gives a new commandment that God is not God of Jews alone but the God of all.
The Jews of that time were no lesser than the Egyptians who once  oppressed the Jews,  The Jewish dominon over the non Jewish was  a regressive oppression meted out by them because of  holding the dearly privilege of claiming God as their own.

Their sense of hegemony is quite evident ,the comments such as aren't they all Galileans who are speaking.v.7
They must be drunk.v13

Aren't the Galileans good enough to speak about God or own God.
Shouldn't others who aren't Jews talk the God talk.

By reiterating the Prophecy given to Joel, God reestablished Godself as the God of all and dismantled the Ownership of God that Jews created by misinterpreting scriptures for their supremacy.

The very words I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh reinstates hope in a all loving God , The wall of exclusiveness was broken and a community of inclusiveness initiated on the day of the Pentecost by descending, discerning, enriching empowering of the Holy Spirit.

May we all discern the Holy Spirit to create a wider community that includes all races, caste, gender without any pride, privilege and prejudice.

Social Distancing, Sanatana Dharma , Samaritan Woman : A Juxtapose in the context of COVID-19 Lockdown

Social Distancing, Sanatana Dharma , Samaritan Woman : A Juxtapose in  the context of COVID-19 Lockdown

Social distancing is the new term that is being profusely used during this severe pandemic COVID-19 which is threatening the lives of many all over the world. Measures and ideas of social distancing have been strictly adhered to prevent the spread of COVID-19 through community. It’s quite alarming to see plethora of memes, videos and hoaxes shared on social distancing and Sanatana dharma on Social Media platforms such as Facebook, whatsapp and Tik Tok.

A critical juxtapose  to shed light on truths, facts and scripture can be a solace at times as these than succumbing to all that is shared on social media.
Social distancing has taken various definitions according to nations that have been infested with COVID-19. Furthermore there are parallels that are been drawn and various expressions have been identified with social distancing. Whereas the definition of social distancing according to Merriam Webster dictionary is

‘The practice of maintaining a greater than usual physical distance from other people or of avoiding direct contact with people or objects in public places during the outbreak of a contagious disease in order to minimize exposure and reduce the transmission of infection’ [1]

And as we see the above definition evidently cites that social distancing is done only when there is an outbreak of a contagious disease and it isn’t a lifestyle or any phobia, rather a proactive and preventive restraining of an individual to break the chain of the spread.

Sanatana Dharma
Santana Dharma is propagated as a holistic and humanistic way of life offered from Vedic scriptures and traditions and its followers are ones to pursue peace and harmony. A Sanatana devout does clarify with his definitions of Sanatana dharma likewise

‘God (Brahman), the individual self (atman), prime materiality (jagat, or prakriti), Truth (satya), the Veda (Truth rendered into literary form), and Dharma itself all have necessary existence. They are sanatana. They always have been - and they always shall be.’[2]

Sanatana is thus defined as the everlasting existence of the above referred pointers with an understanding that everything has an attribute.
Therefore according to Sri Dharma Pravartaka Acharya  Dharma

An existent thing’s dharma is that which constitutes the thing’s very essence, without which, the very concept of the thing would be rendered meaningless[3]  Dharma was humanity’s attempt to incorporate the will of the transcendent Divine into the everyday, phenomenal concerns of this world, and to live and explore politics, economics, the arts, music, philosophy, literary expression, and life itself as an everyday, every-moment celebration of the omnipresent imminence of the Divine.[4]

The propagation of Santana dharma has always been so welcoming with mirage that offers no respect and mutual co-existence among fellow beings. However literatures so heart-warming are published, harsh realities of oppression and violence that Sanatana Dharma has offered is more than the viable existence for fellow beings that it promises.

Neo Santana Dharmic Ideologies
The rise of fundamentalism and fanaticism is surging over years in the nation sponsored by right wing extremists. While the violence over the common has been unleashed and resulted in killing spree in the name of vigilantism. A new rise of Sanatana ideologues are all over the Social Media. In the light of COVID-19 There has been a flurry of memes and pictures circulated that Sanatana Dharma ideologies and methods have always taught us cleanliness and hygiene and following this would help us in being unaffected by any diseases.
Some of them have created a wave of implicitly accepting Sanatana Dharma and its oppressive ideologies as natural way of life.

Namaste vs Handshakes
Namaste was never a way of greeting among the common. In a Manu inspired Sanatana Dharmic fanatic society it was always an expression of untouchability. The Namaste was to escape the clasp or grasp any individual. The casteist society never stops with a Namaste after knowing one is of the same caste. It is followed with a warm hug. Whereas, if a person not of their leaning happens to meet, it’s a reluctant gesture to abruptly end of a meeting. The rise of modernism and globalisation however tried to elude such expressions and introduced handshakes and hugs. Neo sanatana dharmic ideologies proliferated by implicit casteist claim that Christian Missionaries, Mullahs and white supremacists have brought to us this pandemic with this annihilation of culture and Sanatana dharma.
But the truth is that Handshake is not always a carrier of viruses. It’s the virus that is spread to the hands from the face or the cough that one sustains in his day to day living.
According to  Adeodata Czink, who runs Business of Manners as reported in World Economic Forum states that

‘The gesture is a super-efficient way to spread germs, given that we also touch our faces unwittingly about one or two dozen times per hour, according to studies, most often touching our eyes, nose, or mouth. Performing the perfectly unnecessary custom of shaking someone’s hand raises the likelihood that you’ll infect yourself with any virus that’s going around.’[5]

Thus handshakes do not really spread the viruses every time but only during outbreaks.

Banging Thalis , ringing Ghantis and chanting Go Corona Go
In spite of the Prime Minister announcing that nation has strictly follow social distancing  as the nation was on the verge of stepping into the most crucial state of community spread of COVID-19 . There were gatherings and groups of mostly with the understanding that that Banging Thalis (plates) , ringing Ghantis(bells) and Chanting Go Corona Go  would chase Corona out of India than thanking the doctors, nurses and  healthcare professionals for their battle over corona. Some vehemently spread hoaxes iver the internet that the vibrations and the chanting would reverberate and kill the virus. The chaotic break of the 12 hour quarantine was mostly from the elitist and right wing enthusiasts who ardently went to the extreme of chanting Jai Shree Ram and Bharat  Mata Ki Jai. The celebration was more than the celebration of India wining the world cup. If COVID-19 was a person it would thank for such a rousing welcome that these people rendered. The so called masses that are slum, pavement and lower middle classes were more obedient to the Prime Minister’s request.

With these ideologies of Namaste and Banging Thalis, ringing Ghantis and Chanting mooting the oppressive ideologies that are zealously expressed and reiterating that Sanatana dharma is no joke claims at times of such a pandemic is a subtle and sublime means of overarching the efforts annihilation of caste that was ignited by B.R. Ambedkar and his enlightenment to the nation.

The challenge is to educate the Social Media Centric younger crust of the nation that haplessly believes every whatsapp hoaxes,  Facebook Memes and Tik tok videos. The Millennial society has to be more critical in analysing everything that is spread and shared on Social Media.

While these erratic exhibitions of oppression and fanaticism that happen incorrigibly at times such as this, there is an alternative that is offered by Samaritan Woman who with  an imposed, dominant fixed lower social status,  social stigma, complex of inferiority, repression of religion , a sense of indignity, and legitimate untouchability all endorsed by then dominant Jewish community overcomes these errands in her conversation with Jesus Christ. She offers a counter conversation. In the  pericope John 4 : 1-45   the woman who is predominantly considered   as an illiterate and lesser in knowledge of the Hebrew Scriptures comparing to the that Jesus had,  goes on to raise questions until she arguably unravels that Jesus is the long awaited Messiah.

Elizabeth Schusller  Fiorenza elucidates that  the theological argument from the mouth of the woman signifies the historical leadership women had opening up Jesus' movement and community to non-Israelites. The woman is thus representative of an exemplary disciple: an apostolic witness.[6] This reversal of social stigma and religion sponsored oppression of the Samaritan woman is a directive for us to unlearn and critically engage with scripture, ethics and science on every dominant ideology that is spread and shared in the name of glorifying and  propagating vice oppressive culture, religion and faith.

Chaos amidst Corona : Xenophobic attacks over North Eastern Fraternity.

Chaos amidst Corona : Xenophobic attacks over North Eastern Fraternity.

Charles Darwin's theory of 'Survival of Fittest ' was always a thought that I always related to animals , where the animal that's a step higher in the pyramid would dominate over the lesser animal and would survive. I always felt that it's barbaric even though it's natural order of life.Alas my respect towards animals changed thanks to all the atrocities that South Indians and North Indians unleash every now and then to all North Eastern brothers and sisters in India. The usually so called friendly south turns extremely Xenophobic during times of crisis.
Some of the Xenophobic incidents over North Easterners
Mass Exodus of North Easterners 2012
Over 2.5 lakh reports firstpost about the numbers of North Easterners who fled their places to work towards their respective states of the 7 sisters of North East. The cause was utter chaos created through Xenophobic attacks in Delhi, Mumbai, Banglore, SMS , rumours, Whatsapp messages that created panic and unrest that there were  many students who left their studies and youngsters who left their prospective careers and run for life to their homes.
Xenophobic Names
Chinkis, Chinese, Are you from India ?? Dog eaters.
These are some of the demeaning names  or titles that are hurled at North Easterners everytime when they step out other than their hometown. Its always a heartbreaking experience that they have to endure. Some of my very own friends had to undergo these bitter experience. Some where questioned about their nationality while visiting places and were asked to pay entrance fees as a foreigner would pay for visiting that site.
Some are labelled for their choice of food and cuisine and always stereotyped that they are interested in Dog Meat. Which they aren't.
Chinese and Corona Virus.
It was quite disturbing to see videos being shared and surfacing on Social Media that showcase the ugly side of North Indians and South Indians who are already oppressive with their behaviour ,attitude and peak to their worst by calling North Easterners as Chinese and Corona. The problem lies not in the illiterate common masses. But in the failure of the literate elites who have failed immensely in educating the Nation that North East is very much part of India and the nation is diverse in its inhabitants. They are much people of this land. They are the ones who stayed loyal to stick to the nation of India than aligning with any other nation or being independent.

During times such critical times as this . Its the duty of the church to educate its members to be more inclusive than being an exclusive company of a particular region or ethnicity. Let's start with the Sunday School and teach them that the nation is diverse and there are people of every look and  color on India and it's in such a state of living among people of different identities is more creative, fun and joy. Awaiting a more accommodative and cherishing future.

Corona , Commodification and Church

Corona , Commodification and Church

Wuhan was the epicentre of the Corona Virus Outbreak at the fag end of 2019. However China tried to annihilate with a 24×7 building 2 hospitals within 10 days.It couldn't cope the pace of the pandemic. While the doctors were on a spree of identifying and treating the citizens of Wuhan who were locked down in their respective places of shelter. An ugly side of human greed and injustice of commodifictaion of the corona was co existing. The toilet paper rolls and masks were sold at unbelievable prices. Some places even washed and resold used masks to mint money by taking advantage of the crisis situation and ripping of as much money one can make out of the situation.

As the CoVid 19 spread so did the greed of exploitation spread over the globe and did take toll on the lives of poor and downtrodden. The focus has been on the rich and affluent. Only countries have taken measures to address the plight of the homeless and the poor. The poor have been the most affected by the pandemic, the life of a poor homeless citizen has already been so bleak with mearge food and shelter. The lockdown and the closure of markets have taken a toll even on the one day meal that they had from leftovers or remains ot alms that they received. The wage of daily wage labourers have also affected. Those who work on daily basis for their livelihood have been pushed into a dire state of poverty.
The rich and aristocrats have their time of leisure and recreation and time of fun and  games with their family.Whereas the poor are already dying out of hunger. However Corona didn't show disparity and differences as humans would do. The Capitalists society has jeopardized the poor with Commodification of Corona.

The universal church and the denominations of church all over the world have been bamboozled with Corona virus. The Church situation is on pendulum with debate of faith over pandemic or Precautions over Pandemic. There have been constant closure of churches in Europe and some churches opening up their premises for prayer. Pope Francis went to churches and prayed for protection over the pandemic in Rome .While a priest in Milan pinned the photos of his members in the pews and conducted the worship.
The church has been brought to loggerhead situation to cope with. While the church does want to instill faith of God being a healer of any plague. The Government and measures of awareness has imbibed fear. The spread of hoaxes in Social Media has also spiked up the threat of Xenophobia over Asians.

In the purview of Jesus' ethics and in the words of the catholic priest Gustavo Gutierrez.God's preferential option has always been on the poor. And in the light of Matthew 25 :40.

Matthew 25:40
And the king will answer them, ‘Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me.’

As the churches have been pushed to cancel the services world over , its the churches bounden duty to heed to bleak, feeble voices of the poor and homeless. Remember more than liturgical service, the need of the hour is service to the poor and needy.

The Irony of LIfe

The Irony of Life
As a kid I wanted to grow up
But now, I think the days have just fastened up
As kid I wanted to be mature
But now, I run towards my future
As kid I longed to be with my friends
But now, I find it hard to spend with time with friends

As a kid I always wanted my dreams to aspire
But now, I regret for the many of my desires
As I kid I knew school as class
But now, I see people discriminated by class
As a kid all I knew was a set of people in a drama as cast
But now, see a majority of people being sidelined  in the name of caste

As a kid I knew color pencils as colors
But now, I see black and white as the racist colors
As a kid playing with pain in the rain was fun
But now, my running in pain is other’s fun
As a kid my parents wanted me to be in vain
But now, I strive to be my parents gain.

As a kid I always wanted to grow
But now, I worry why did I ever grow??
As a kid I longed for many relationships
But now, I'm just a member of many fellowships
As a kid all I wanted was an easy life
But now, realize that being a kid was the easiest  of life
